Summer Bay resident Irene Roberts (Lynne McGranger) will be diagnosed with breast cancer in an upcoming storyline, a report has claimed. The well loved character on the Australian soap which is currently on hiatus in the UK will get a shock when a test reveals that she's suffering from cancer.
Talking to Australian telly magazine TV Week, show stalwart McGranger said: ''She discovers a lump, which is a message we wanted to get across - that self-examination can save lives. It's alarming, but she tries to keep it together and goes to the doctor, and then gets the bad news that it's a form of cancer.''
Explaining how her character reacts to the devestating news, Lynne added: ''She can't quite take it in. Like any woman facing the thought of removing her breast and battling cancer, she's floored." The actress also praised bosses at the soap for highlighting the important issue adding that it was an honour to be a part of the storyline.
She said: ''I'm thrilled to be able to pay homage to so many women I know out there who are fighting this disease, or have beaten it, or, sadly, have lost their lives.'' The storyline will play out on screens in Australia from next week and here in the UK, it will begin later this year.
