Peter Armitage to be written out of his minor role on ITV1 soap ''Coronation Street''

Peter Armitage is to be written out of his minor role as Bill Webster on ITV1 soap Coronation Street. The actor who has played the father of regular character Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) on and off since 1984 will be written out as producer Phil Collinson felt the character had run its course.

According to News Of The World, the boss of the show called Peter in last week to tell him that there was no future for the character. A source said: ''Bill is off travelling with girlfriend Pam in the story. Peter wanted to know where the character was headed as there was talk of him becoming seriously ill.''

The source continued: ''He was really surprised when Phil told him Bill wouldn't be coming back. The cast and crew were shocked as Peter is a popular guy. But that was it. Peter understands the fickle nature of TV. But people like Bill. He hasn't been killed off so the door is open for him to return one day.''

Peter first appeared as Bill in 1984 for a year before returning in 1994 until he was written out in 1997 as he left for Germany with Maureen Naylor (Sherrie Hewson). He then returned in 2007.
