As five characters are axed from ITV soap Coronation Street, another character is set to make a return

It looks like there may be another cast cull on ITV soap Coronation Street. The Iconic soap that  celebrated 50 years on air in December infamously got rid of a large number of characters in 2009 as well as axing The Peacock family and Molly amongst others last year.

However, according to newspaper The People, producer Phil Collinson may be getting rid of more characters as tomorrow's paper reports that 4 characters are set to leave the cobbles later this year in what it reports as a ''Big Corrie Kill Off''. Whether this means the characters are set to be killed off or they are just being axed is unknown.

The characters rumoured to be axed are Cheryl Gray (Holly Quin-Ankrah), her son Russ (Finton Flynn), her ex-husband Chris Gray (Will Thorp) and lesbian teenager Sian Powers (Sacha Parkinson). Despite being regarded as minor characters by fans, Sian is at the centre of a controversial storyline with her girlfriend Sophie Webster (Brooke Vincent) and was reported to have signed a new contract.

However, we can't help but feel sceptical, the newspaper tweeted last week promising a juicy story on a big Coronation Street axing however the paper made a hiccup with it in fact being the departure of Emmerdale's Mia Macey (Sapphire Elia). However Sian's axing may be combatting recent criticism aimed at producer Phil Collinson who is himself openly gay for the large number of gay characters who fans have criticized as ''stale and boring''.

Also being axed is Cheryl's partner Lloyd Mullaney played by Red Dwarf actor Craig Charles who has been ''rested'' but is expected to return in Spring. However, it's good news for fans of popular Amber Kalarai (Nikki Patel), the daughter of Dev who is set to make a return. Speculation about Amber's return had been rife since Antony Cotton who plays Sean Tulley made a blunder by tweeting that he had been working on set with Amber.

Regardless of the reasons, if this is true, is it surprising? Do you think Phil has made a mistake axing the characters or do you agree that they are minor characters?
