Coronation Street spoilers today suggest that a long-term character is set to be killed off.
Rita Tanner, played by Barbara Knox, has been on the ITV soap for more than 50 years.
Rita has been a regular on Corrie since the 1970s although made her first appearance back in 1964.
During that time she's appeared in more than 3,600 episodes making her the show's fourth longest running character, behind estranged husband Dennis Tanner, Emily Bishop and Ken Barlow.
But The Sun on Sunday report that she's due to be written out in a heartbreaking storyline.
Recent episodes have seen Rita begin to showcase some strange behaviour, leading friends to fear she has dementia.
However in fact she'll be diagnosed with a tumour with 'tragic consequences'.
It's said that Rita will reject doctor's pleas to operate on her over fears she will "wake up to a life that she no longer remembers."
"Doctors will say there is a serious risk she will die if they don’t remove it," a source explained. “But Rita is terrified that she could not know who she is, or recognise her friends.
“All the indications are that this will end tragically.”
For now, Coronation Street continues at 7:30PM and 8:30PM on Monday night on ITV.
