Coronation Street original Dennis Tanner will rock up on the cobbles homeless, his actor has confirmed. Philip Lowrie who is returning to the show over 40 years after Dennis made his exit in 1968 reveals that things have changed considerably for the former bad lad. Fans of the ITV soap who have watched from the beginning will remember Dennis as a young bad boy who had an infamous rivalry with fellow original who is still in the soap today Ken Barlow (William Roache).
However it is not known if Dennis will be up to his old tricks again when he makes a return to the show later this year. What is known however is that the character will be first see on our screens as he meets Sian Powers and Sophie Webster as he makes use of the soup kitchen they happen to be volunteering in. It's not known how he will come to make his way back in Weatherfield however we're sure Ken Barlow will be surprised to see his old sparring partner on the cobbles.
Speaking to PA, Lowrie said: ''When we see Dennis on May 12, he's actually homeless, sleeping in a doorway in a cardboard box.'' Phillip also revealed that Dennis will be rubbing people up the wrong way from the beginning especially nosy newsagent Norris Cole who ''doesn't like him, not one bit.'' We first revealed that Dennis was set to make a comeback in January when bosses delightedly told the press that the show original would be back just a matter of months after the 50th anniversary of the programme which was celebrated in December.
Dennis is perhaps best known for his mother, the legendary Elsie Tanner who was played by the late Pat Phoenix. The matriarch was one of the show's best loved characters in its' first few years and to this day remains one of the most iconic faces to grace Weatherfield. However, it won't be just Ken who will recognise Dennis, other characters who were on the soap when Dennis last appeared in 1968 are Emily Bishop and Rita Sullivan. Rita in paticular might be glad to see Dennis back as she and him were romantically linked during his eight years on the show.
However, unsurprisingly it's looking like Ken will be the one to lock horns with Dennis as rumours suggest that the cheeky homeless man will try sleeping on his doorstep! So, could this return signal an exciting new era for the show? Are you looking forward to seeing Ken and him lock horns again? Or would you rather they created new characters rather than re-introduce old ones?
