Coronation Street actress Katherine Kelly is to leave the ITV soap after five years playing highly popular Becky Mc Donald on the Manchester based soap. The actress will wrap up filming later this year but Becky will remain on our screens until early 2012, it is understood.
The build up to the lass' exit will begin next month as the police begin to investigate her and husband Steve Mc Donald (Simon Gregson) after social services find out that Becky nephew Max was purchased from half-sister Kylie by the broody woman as we reported last week.
With the belief that arch-nemesis Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford) has reported her to the authorities, Becky is soon on the warpath, smashing through the window of Tracy's house with a sledge hammer and threatening to kill her putting both Tracy's life and her own marriage to Steve at risk.
Speaking about her exit, Katherine said: ''It's been one of the hardest decisions of my life. I love Coronation Street and everyone here. I've had the most blissful five years. I wouldn't change one moment of it - but it feels like the time is right to say goodbye to Becky.''
Producer for the ITV Soap, Phil Collinson commented: ''Katherine is a talented actress who has made the character of Becky a firm favourite with the viewers for the past five years and we will miss her as an actress and a valued member of the Coronation Street family. That said, we totally respect her desire to move on and viewers can certainly look forward to an electrifying nine months of gripping storylines involving Becky Mc Donald as we head towards her departure from Weatherfield.''
