Eastenders have recast the role of Janine Malloy's (Charlie Brooks) grandmother Lydia Simmonds following original actress Margaret Tyzack's (pictured) withdrawal from the show for personal reasons.
Earlier this year, TellyMix reported that the veteran actress had been cast as bad girl Janine's grandmother and last week, viewers saw the character make her debut on the show as Janine visited her poorly grandmother in the hospital.
However, with the departure of the actress, bosses at the BBC soap have recast the role of Lydia with actress Heather Chasen taking the reigns as the mischievous pensioner. Chasen who is famous for her roles in Z Cars, The Bill and Doctors amongst many shows, unusually, the recast will have immediate effect as bosses have promised the plot to be one of the central storylines in the show over the next few months.
Speaking about the recast, a spokesperson for the show said: ''Unfortunately, due to a personal matter, Margaret Tyzack has had to finish filming earlier than planned. In order to continue the current storyline, we've taken the decision for Heather Chasen to take over the role of Lydia. ''
Heather is to start filming on Friday with the changeover set to take place immediately. The new actress will be seen on screen in the role of Lydia from next week onwards.
