Eastenders minx Janine Molloy (Charlie Brooks) is to finally meet her match when her feisty grandmother comes to Walford. Star of the stage Margaret Tyzack will play the role of Lydia Simmonds, Janine's maternal grandmother.
Janine will be stunned to confront her estranged grandmother in April when Lydia comes to visit her. The estrangement came when Janine's mother June, Lydia's daughter had a fling with Frank whom upper class Lydia believed was ''common as muck''.
However time has changed Lydia and the woman who was once a lady of class and dignity is known for nasty behaviour in her local area meaning people do their best to try and avoid her. Janine is going to have her work cut out trying to get one over on her grandmother.
Speaking of her new role, Tyzack who also starred in A Clockwork Orange, said excitedly: ''I am delighted to be joining a great British tradition and a fine company of actors.'' As Lydia is reunited with her grand-daughter, viewers will be left wondering if Lydia just wants to be a happy family or if she has ulterior motives.
Speaking about the casting, executive producer Bryan Kirkwood commented: ''What a coup to have Margaret Tyzack starring in Eastenders. She is an actress of incredible class and talent. Lydia has endless possibilities as a character and I can't wait to see Janine meet her match.''
Are you counting down the days until Lydia makes her way to the square? Should Janine be worried about finally meeting someone to outwit her? Or do you think there are too many new faces to cope with?
