One of the original faces characters in Coronation Street will make a shocking return this year, it has been confirmed. Dennis Tanner, son of show icon Elsie Tanner will make his way back to the cobbled streets of Weatherfield later this year. The character was last seen in 1968 when he moved to Bristol with his wife.
Dennis' actor Philip Lowrie will be reprising his role in March with Dennis' first scenes set to air on screen in May. The return is set to be a surprise for old rival Ken Barlow who is the only character still on the show who was there from the first episode.
In an interview with tabloid The Sun, an insider revealed: ''Dennis' return will set the cat amongst the pigeons. Ken was always sparring with Dennis in the old days. They are still chalk and cheese.'' The return comes on the back of Coronation Street's 50th anniversary celebrations in December 2010 when a tram crashed onto the cobbles.
The source added: ''Dennis was involved in dodgy dealing, theft, fights and spent time in borstal. He was the bane of mum Elsie's life.'' The return is definitely exciting for long-term fans who remember Dennis and his rivalry with Ken and with Eileen Derbyshire set to celebrate 50 years in the role of Emily Bishop this week, an old face from the first episode returning is sure to go down a treat.
75-year-old Philip has acted in television and theatre since leaving the show and with reports that it's a six month contract with a possibility of an extension, Coronation Street is going from strength to strength. Be sure to expect fireworks when Dennis makes his return!
