Gillian Wright is leaving behind her role as Jean Slater on Eastenders it has been revealed. The actress, best known for her long running role as the bipolar sufferer on the BBC1 soap will film her final scenes shortly. Jean will depart on-screen in October.
Wright's first scenes as Jean were aired in late 2004 whilst she joined the show as a regular cast member in 2007. Her most famous storylines have revolved around her relationship with daughter Stacey (Lacey Turner) however last year she took centre-stage after she was swindled by Michael Moon (Steve John Shepherd).
Jean's exit is thought to link to her new relationship with green fingered Ollie. As her relationship develops, Jean tries to keep her disorder from the new romance.
In a statement, Wright said: ''It has been a huge privilege to play Jean Slater these last eight years. It has been a huge privilege to play Jean Slater these last eight years. I treasure the viewers' care and love for the character not only through her hard times but through all the laughter too.''
''I will miss EastEnders enormously, but it is time for me to step back and enjoy other acting challenges. I would love Jean to return to The Square one day, so let's hope this is not goodbye, but au revoir."
