X Factor judge Gary Barlow has admitted that some of the judges at the auditions weren't great.
Following the exit of Kelly Rowland from the panel this year, a range of stars joined Tulisa, Gary and Louis Walsh on the panel for the auditions.
Guest judges included former winner Leona Lewis and chart topper Rita Ora, as well as eventual new permanent judge Nicole Scherzinger.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Gary said: "It was interesting how it worked out.
"We had guest judges like Geri Halliwell, Leona Lewis and Nicole in for the early auditions this year and that worked almost as an audition for the final judging place. Some of the guest judges were good; some weren’t – and it isn’t always the people you expect who have it."
Asked why he felt Nicole was the one to get the job, Gary said: "Nicole got the job because she clicked, she fitted in.
"She’s had international success, and I think she’ll be good with the contestants. She’s quite emotional, maternal almost."
And the Take That star suggested: "To be honest, I think you could have the same four judges every year. I’m not sure the reinvention of the show comes about through changing the panel. I think it’s more about the contestants. If they’re no good, no one will watch."
