ITV have backed signing up Gary Barlow to The X Factor 2012, despite Simon Cowell reportedly wanting him fired.
It was claimed this week that Simon was unhappy with ITV overruling him to invite the Take That star back to the panel.
In revelations made in a new unauthorised biography, the music mogul apparently found Gary "stiff" and "scripted" last year.
But sources at ITV have defended Gary.
"Simon is an incredible talent and a brilliant producer," an ITV insider, clearly keen not to get sacked, said today. "But we pay him to make these shows and have to be able to have the final say.
"That’s never how it worked in the past. When it comes down to it, Gary was the best option given Simon was unable to be on the panel.
"There is no one else of his calibre who could do the job."
And according to the Daily Mail, Simon has also now given Gary his backing.
"Like last year, he will be in LA when The X Factor is on air, so he understands that ITV has to be happy with the line-up," a source close to the music mogul told the newspaper. "But, remember, this is still his show and he will be heavily involved.
"He did have certain issues with Gary as a judge, but believes these will improve in the next series."
