X Factor boss Simon Cowell has finally admitted he messed up with Cheryl Cole on The X Factor USA, almost a year after it happened.
Following close to 18 months of hype and rumours, Cheryl was finally confirmed as a judge on the new American version of the hit reality series last May, but was axed after filming just four audition shows.
Simon confessed: "I know when I've crossed the line a little bit.
"I thought there was going to be a big reaction. I wasn't prepared for what was coming next.
"I had to apologise for the way it was handled."
Simon insisted that the pair were back on talking terms, but still weren't speaking as much as they used to.
"We text occasionally. I mean she's not on the phone every night anymore, but she broke the ice when she sent me that funny birthday message," he said.
That funny birthday message read "Simon Cowell is 52 today. Ha ha ha. Love Cheryl," and was attached to a plane being flown over his US home.
Simon laughed: "I thought it was hilarious. I loved her for it."
