The 2008 champ is currently number two in the midweeks with her latest single Elephant, and revealed how she wants her latest era to be "fiercer" than her debut.
"I actually watched Rihanna to channel that. I watched her video for Wait Your Turn, which was something that inspired me," Alex explained to MTV this week.
She continued: "Plus, you just know that anything by Beyoncé is inspiring full stop. I did try and channel Rihanna and Beyoncé’s videos [in order] to be fierce and you know, they’ve got that swag so it’s always good to watch them for inspiration.
"The song needed that as well because you’re telling a guy to get lost. It was a fun video and one that I’ve never really done before."
Elephant is the first track to be taken from Alex's latest album, the second to be released since she won the show four years ago, and her first since leaving Simon Cowell’s Syco record label.
Speaking about the song, and the direction of the new record, Alex went on: "It's very different from any of the songs I have recorded on Overcome [her debut album] and it’s very dancey, very Ibiza.
"I really wanted to come back with an uptempo song that was something that I've been through and I think that anyone can relate to the meaning of the song.
"Just the simple fact that no one here in the UK really uses there term ‘there’s an elephant in the room’ often, it’s more American so I thought I would bring it to the UK and be the first to kind of make it something."
She added: "I absolutely love the track and think it’s an awesome song and one of my favourites off the new album."
Alex recently revealed she was also hoping to duet with her own mum on the upcoming release, which is due out in the summer.
