The X Factor boss Simon Cowell is reportedly battling with rival show Strictly Come Dancing to land a comeback performance from his old pal Cheryl.

Cheryl is due to unveil new music this Autumn, four years since she released her last album ‘Only Human’.

Her return is so highly anticipated that she appears to be at the centre of a TV bidding war.

According to The Sun, both X Factor and Strictly are desperate to book the former Girls Aloud star for a guest performance on their new series.

Given her history as a judge on The X Factor, Simon apparently “expects” Cheryl to side with his singing contest.

“There’s a massive race on for who can land Cheryl to perform her new material,” a source commented.

“All the big shows want her as they know her return to music will be one of the biggest music moments of the year and will draw in millions of viewers.”

The mysterious mole added that Simon is doing “everything in his power” to keep Cheryl away from Strictly.

“It would be a massive embarrassment if Strictly got her with an offer she can’t refuse,” they said.

“He’s told her he will throw his weight behind her new album 100 per cent regardless, as they are mates.

“But he expects her to show her loyalty by choosing X Factor.”

If ratings are the only factor in Cheryl’s decision, it would be a no-brainer.

Last year’s Strictly averaged a massive 11.14million viewers, while The X Factor managed a comparatively paltry 6.52million.

However, the latter typically attracts a younger audience that may be more interested in her music.

Even if she sides with the BBC’s celebrity dance extravaganza, it may work to Simon’s advantage.

Cheryl is widely expected to be a judge on his latest project ‘The Greatest Dancer’, set to debut on BBC One next year.

Should she choose a Strictly appearance, it could help promote the new show.

The X Factor is due to return to our screens in August, followed by Strictly in September.
