With Nicole Scherzinger said to be leaving X Factor, Cheryl has been tipped to return to the ITV singing competition.
However, she has already taped a pilot for The Greatest Dancer, Simon's new BBC One dancing contest.
Recent reports suggest that the former Girls Aloud star would prefer to appear on the "fresh" format.
Now it seems Simon's on her side, as the Mail on Sunday claims he too thinks she should stick with The Greatest Dancer.
An insider told the newspaper: "The feeling was mutual. Simon wanted Cheryl to do the dance show, not X Factor."
Another source, supposedly 'close to Cheryl', said the duo's rumoured X Factor reunion "isn't to be".
"Simon loves working with Cheryl," they commented. "They have a love-hate relationship, which the viewers do love, but it isn’t to be this year."
Cheryl is also said to believe the new show would be easier to juggle with life as a mum to Bear, her year-old son with Liam Payne.
"She also has Bear to think about in terms of how much time she spends working," the source added.
The Greatest Dancer is expected to hit our screens early next year, rivalling ITV's The Voice UK on Saturday nights.
It is Simon's first ever project for the BBC, and will be co-produced by his firm Syco and FremantleMedia's Thames.
Meanwhile, The X Factor's fifteenth series begins filming in just weeks - but its judging panel is up in the air.
Simon is due to return, as are Louis Walsh and Sharon Osbourne, who are already contracted for another year.
A question mark hangs over the fourth spot, with Rita Ora now the bookies' favourite to replace Nicole.
It has been confirmed that room auditions have been replaced by arena auditions, which will take place in London and Liverpool in July.
