The X Factor 2017 was the show's least watched series ever based on official viewing figures.

Stats out this week show that the latest run was watched by an average audience of 6.3 million viewers.

This includes those watching on the night and catching up in the seven days after.

That's down 1.3 million viewers on last year's series on average and the sixth consecutive yearly decline from the show's peak in 2010.

Since then the show has lost more than half its audience, as an average of 13 million viewers tuned in each weekend to watch the likes of One Direction, Cher Lloyd and Wagner seven years ago.

The first series of The X Factor in 2004 averaged 7.4 million viewers, with last year's run the first to dip below that figure.

This year saw the same panel as 2016 with Simon Cowell returning alongside Louis Walsh, Sharon Osbourne and Nicole Scherzinger.

And while the auditions stayed the same, the live shows saw a huge overhaul which included seeing contestants signing on both Saturday and Sunday nights.

Ahead of the final at the weekend, ITV gave The X Factor its backing.

Although viewing figures for this year's series have hit new lows, catch up numbers have increased and advertiser friendly young viewers are tuning in.

The ITV series has beaten Strictly in the 16-34 demographic for 8 of the 10 weekends they've been on air.

An ITV spokesperson told the Guardian newspaper ahead of the final earlier this month: “We have a terrific final coming up this weekend, with some amazing talent.

"The X Factor ratings rise when consolidated viewing is factored in. The show performs well for younger audiences and it is an important part of ITV’s autumn schedule.”

The X Factor will return next year on ITV with its second series as part of a three series deal.
