The X Factor 2017 launched down on last year's viewing figures, according to the first ratings.

Overnight data released this morning suggests that the first audition show of the series was watched by a total audience of 6.2 million viewers on the night.

That's down 600,000 on last year's opener and the lowest launch since series one. 2005 was the next lowest at 6.6 million.

The (very good) launch episode last night peaked with 7 million viewers, down around 500,000 viewers on 2016's launch.

There was no Xtra Factor this year, with the spin-off show having been cut by ITV before the new series kicked off.

Despite being down on last year, The X Factor was still by far the biggest show on TV last night and did double more than any other ITV show. New physical game show Cannonball opened to 3.2 million while The Chase spin-off The Family Chase started with 2.5 million.

Meanwhile over on BBC One, Casualty's latest episode was seen by 3.5 million viewers, the most watched show of the night for the channel.

Len Goodman's Partners In Crime fell again for its latest episode, pulling in just 1.2 million viewers, while pointless had 3.1 million.
