One Direction's Harry Styles set to beat Ed Sheeran to Number 1

Harry Styles is doing battle with Ed Sheeran for his first number single this week.

One Direction star Harry released his debut solo single Sign of The Times on Friday and it quickly shot up to the top of iTunes charts across the UK.

To date the record has sold 30,000 copies, the Official Charts Company reports this evening.

That puts the song at Number 1 with Ed Sheeran just behind.

However it's not actually Ed's Shape Of You, which has been number one for the past 13 weeks, that is behind.

Instead, it's Ed's new single Galway Girl that poses a threat to Harry.

If Harry can hold on to the top spot to Friday he'll be the second One Direction member to score Number 1 with a solo single: Zayn Malik was the first in January 2016 with Pillowtalk.

Niall Horan's debut solo effort This Town managed Number 9 last year while Louis Tomlinson's Just Hold On with Steve Aoki peaked at Number 2.

As yet, Liam Payne is the only member of the currently on hiatus group to have not released solo material.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in this week's charts, One Direction's fellow X Factor alum Little Mix are on the up with their new single No More Sad Songs, which is currently sitting just outside the Top 10 in the midweeks at Number 11.

This week's final Official Chart will be revealed at 6PM on Friday evening.
