The X Factor 2016 final last night was watched by 7 million viewers.

As was expected, the last live show of the series enjoyed a relatively high rating compared to the past 10 weeks of live shows.

The average audience of 7 million made last night's episode the most watched live show of the series and was up 1.5 million on Saturday's figure of 5.5 million.

However it still couldn't match up to the auditions back in September where over 8 million were tuning in.

And while up on past weeks, last night's viewing figures still leave the 2016 X Factor final with the unfortunate title of the least watched ever.

The show was down 1.4 million viewers on 2015's Sunday instalment and over 2 million below 2014's Sunday episode. The first series in 2004 had 8.1 million viewers for its results show.

Over on BBC One, Strictly Come Dancing once again topped the night's viewing figures with a whopping average audience of 11 million, up over a million viewers on Saturday's performances.

Up 200,000 viewers on last year and some 1.8 million on 2014, the latest results show peaked at over 12 million viewers as the final three celebrities were confirmed.

Meanwhile, rivalling The X Factor in the 8PM hour, Planet Earth 2 concluded its series with a massive 9.5 million viewers.

While The X Factor and Planet Earth are both finished for the year, Strictly returns next Saturday night for its grand final.
