The X Factor 2016: Simon Cowell says his Gifty Louise voting gaffe was "humiliating"

Simon Cowell has addressed the awkward moment he mistakenly voted to eliminate Gifty Louise live on The X Factor 2016.

During last night's results show, the media mogul named his own act when Dermot O'Leary asked who he wanted to send home.

He quickly backtracked and was allowed to recast his vote, but it failed to save Gifty, with the other three judges eliminating her.

Simon spoke about the incident at the Pride of Britain Awards tonight, telling The Sun: "It was humiliating! That's the nature of live TV but it was horrible."

Discussing Gifty's exit, he added: "People should have voted for her that's the way it goes. I thought I knew who was going to win but I've changed my mind now."

Earlier, Gifty had her own say on Simon's blunder in a chat with Digital Spy.

"That was a kick in the stomach. Even my mentor wants me to go!" she joked. "I think it was a mistake though, and I just laughed it off."

Viewers compared the gaffe to Olly Murs's infamous blunder on the last series, when he told Monica Michael she was going home as a vote went to Deadlock.

Of course, Simon hasn't been the only judge to embarrass himself this year: Sharon Osbourne previously forgot Saara Aalto's name.

The X Factor continues on Saturday at 8.00pm with a boybands vs. girlbands theme.
