X Factor 2016: Simon Cowell says he gave Gifty Louise wrong song for Fright Night

Mentor admits Fifth Harmony track was too "gimmicky" for her

Simon Cowell has admitted that he gave X Factor 2016 eliminee Gifty Louise the wrong song for Halloween week.

Last night's Fright Night special saw Gifty perform Fifth Harmony track 'I'm In Love With A Monster'.

However, she failed to secure enough public support, and the judges voted to eliminate her tonight over Four Of Diamonds.

Speaking on The Xtra Factor afterwards, her mentor Simon admitted he regrets the song choice, calling it too "gimmicky".

Sighing loudly, he reacted: "Do you know what, it's one of those things.

"I think it was a mistake the song I chose last night. It happens and I felt bad for her, but you can't take it back."

He continued: "When I heard her sing tonight at the end and I realised what a great singer she was, I think probably the song was too gimmicky.

"You can beat yourself up, but like I said to her on the main show, you've got to use this opportunity in a positive way."

Simon has already been facing criticism for giving Gifty her second Fifth Harmony song in four weeks.

The media mogul denied accusations that he used her to promote the girlband, who are signed to his Syco label.

During tonight's show, Simon suffered an embarrassing blunder by accidentally voting to eliminate Gifty.

The X Factor continues next Saturday at 8.00pm on ITV.
