Simon Cowell votes to axe his OWN X Factor 2016 act Gifty Louise in embarrassing slip-up

Viewers compared it to Olly Murs's infamous Monica Michael gaffe

Simon Cowell suffered an embarrassing blunder on tonight's The X Factor 2016 live show when he almost voted to ELIMINATE his own act Gifty Louise.

The latest results saw Gifty go head-to-head with Four of Diamonds in the sing-off after Ryan Lawrie was saved by the Lifeline Vote.

As always, it was up to the panel to decide who would leave, with host Dermot O'Leary saying: "Judges, time to judge. I need a decision. Simon, coming to you first."

However, when Dermot prompted him for "the name of the act you're sending home", the Syco boss shocked the audience by picking Gifty.

He quickly backtracked, spluttering: "No, I'm not sending Gifty home, I'm sending the girls home."

Dermot allowed him to cast his vote again, saying: "Just to recap, the name of the act you're sending home."

"Okay, rewind, the act I'm sending home, God, Four of Diamonds," Simon confirmed.

The slip-up quickly became the talk of Twitter.

Meanwhile, some viewers compared it to Olly Murs's infamous blunder on last year's series, when he incorrectly told Monica Michael she was going home as the vote reverted to Deadlock.

The correction was little consolation for Gifty, as a shock result saw her sent home by the other three judges.

The X Factor continues next Saturday on ITV with a Girlbands vs. Boybands theme.

Plus Robbie Williams will be performing in the next results show.
