Louis Walsh has hit out at last year's X Factor 2016 judges.

In an interview, the outspoken judge claimed that last year's line up were "too cool for school".

Rita Ora, Nick Grimshaw and Cheryl Cole had joined Simon Cowell on the panel in 2015 while Caroline Flack and Olly Murs hosted the show.

But Louis slammed Rita: “She’s turned into more of a clothes horse than a pop star.”

Speaking to the Daily Star newspaper, Louis revealed: “I would have only come back if the panel was good.

“I would have said ‘No’ to other people. I only want the people I love, who work hard and people I want to go out for dinner with on a Sunday.”

He added: "It was too cool for school last year. I’m glad it flopped. I used to check the ratings every week – I was so happy.”

Alongside Louis and Simon this year the panel includes former judges Nicole Scherzinger and Sharon Osbourne.

But that's not been the only change.

Dermot O'Leary is back as host while the arena auditions have gone and the live judges' houses experiment has also been axed.

So far, ratings are slightly up on last year but the real test will be the live shows.

Louis is seen picking his finalists for the groups category at judges' houses this weekend.

The X Factor then goes live from next Saturday and Sunday on ITV.
