Gifty Louise Agyeman wowed The X Factor judges at the weekend but has admitted getting to her audition was a tough journey.
A 20 year-old student from Kingston, Gifty went before the judges on Saturday night and impressed with a cover of Mary J Blige's No More Drama.
Gifty won praise from all four judges - including guest Mel B - and sailed through to bootcamp.
Speaking this week, Gifty has opened up about the tragic lead up to her audition over the past few years which included a suicide attempt aged just 16.
It followed the death of her mum when she was 10, leaving the talented musician with depression.
"When I tried to kill myself the whole time I was thinking in my head, ‘Finally I get to join my mum in peace. The pain goes away from now on’," Gifty revealed.
After being rushed to hospital, Gifty went on to make a full recovery and get help.
“When I woke up in that hospital bed and saw my dad right next to me in tears it broke my heart," Gifty told the Daily Star newspaper. “I never thought of my dad when I did it.”
She added: “Waking up in the hospital was a life-changing experience for me. I felt like I had been given another chance to live.”
Gifty, who now speaks publicly about depression and self harm, is now hoping to help others who may be in trouble.
"Gifty wants to help others who are struggling," a source told the tabloid. “She knows how hard life can be and that others are going through similar stuff to what she experienced.
"She feels speaking out is the best way to remind those people they are not alone."
