Simon Cowell facing battle with ITV over Louis Walsh's X Factor 2016 comeback

Louis Walsh may be in 'final talks' to return for The X Factor 2016 - but it seems Simon Cowell will have to win a war with ITV to get his way.

Yesterday it was rumoured that Louis, who left the X Factor last year after eleven series as a judge, will "almost certainly" make a comeback after he flew to LA for meetings with Simon.

However, fresh reports today suggest that ITV has different ideas on who should fill Nick Grimshaw's spot on the panel.

According to the Daily Star, claims that Louis is on the verge of a comeback are "premature".

"At the moment it seems Simon and ITV are at loggerheads," an insider commented.

Simon is said to be eager to get Louis back on the show after concluding that last year's series may have lost viewers to Strictly Come Dancing thanks to its relatively young line-up.

"Simon didn’t really want Louis to go in the first place," a source told The Sun. "Simon wants an older person back after admitting last year’s series was too youthful."

Grimmy revealed that he'd left The X Factor in February, claiming that he only ever wanted to do one series.

There have been no official announcements on who is on the panel this year, though it's believed that Simon is sticking around.

One person that's definitely back is presenter Dermot O'Leary, who has already filmed an advert to promote auditions for the new series.

Former X Factor creative director Brian Friedman this week revealed that he's also interested in returning.

As far as the format goes, bosses have confirmed that the room auditions will be revived for 2016 - though fans may not be so happy to hear that the Six Chair Challenge is also set to stay.
