The X Factor UK could see a huge shake up next year which would see Cheryl Cole axed and Tulisa return to the panel.
The show is already confirmed to be back on ITV next year but exactly what changes will be made remains to be seen.
X Factor boss Simon Cowell admitted that the format really needed to work out some issues before the latest series concluded earlier this month.
The eleventh run was one of the least watched ever with the lowest rated final since the first series back in 2004, despite the fan fare of Simon and Cheryl's return to the panel.
The disappointing viewing figures has led to an assortment of proposed changes which include a possible fifth judge..
A source said: "Simon is considering it, but knows it'd pose loads of problems, like another paycheck, another ego and investing another category.
"Plus, they'd have to divide up that final 12 even more - they only have a few acts as it is."
Cheryl's future on the panel could also be in doubt, with the insider adding: "Simon doesn't know what to do - he thought he and Cheryl coming back would make a bigger splash than it has done."
The move may pave the way for Tulisa to return after the N-Dubz singer hinted at a comeback earlier this year, even before she filled in for Mel B during the final.
Other rumoured changes being considered behind the scenes include the axe of deadlock for the live shows and a revamped bootcamp that would see the controversial six chair challenge cut.
Auditions for the new series will begin in the New Year.
