Jack Walton has admitted he was intimidated by his mentor Mel B on The X Factor.
Jack left the competition on Saturday night in a twist elimination, having polled the fewest viewer votes after his performance of Bleeding Love.
It followed some clashes with mentor Mel over song choice and staging, including Mel's demand that Jack should take his top off during the performance.
Speaking after his exit today, Jack said: "Mel means well with what she says. She sometimes comes across in a way you don’t really get because she’s Scary Spice. That’s quite intimidating sometimes but once you get used to her she is really easy to get on with. She is lovely."
He told the Metro newspaper:"But it was hard to stand up to her. I mean it’s Mel B from the Spice girls, and then there’s me, Jack from Castleford who hasn’t done much apart from being on the show.
"So I was like ‘well whatever you say must be right because you’re successful and I’m not."
Jack went on: "But I wasn’t going to rip my shirt off like she wanted. I just knew that wasn’t me at all.
"It was hard to do because it felt like I was going against my own mentor’s decisions. But I knew deep down that if my family and friends saw me doing that they’d be like ‘what’s he doing? That’s not jack’ and that would upset me more."
Despite a relatively early exit out of the competition, Jack did leave with some lasting words from Simon Cowell.
"The positive I got out of it was Simon saying ‘I think you’ve got a future in the music industry’. That meant a lot to me," he added.
