X Factor 2014 ratings continue downwards trend

Major

The X Factor 2014 ratings have continued their downwards trend, dropping 300,000 viewers week-on-week.

Last night's penultimate arena audition show was seen by a total of 8.6 million viewers, including those who caught up ITV+1.

It was another steep decline on last week's figure of 8.9 million, which in turn was down on the week before.

The show has now dropped a million viewers on average from its first Saturday show last month.

And the comparisons from year to year are equally negative, with last night's episode down 260,000 viewers on the equivalent episode of series ten.

Next weekend will see ITV "experiment" - to quote Simon Cowell - by airing the X Factor on the Friday for the first time.

Simon said: "I think because also we ran Britain’s Got Talent obviously as a strip for years and this year it rated better on the Thursday or Friday then it did the Saturday interestingly enough, so I think they [ITV], they are confident people will watch it on a Friday."

However the episode will face off head to head against the first Strictly Come Dancing live show, which starts at the same time on BBC One.

The two shows will also overlap on the Saturday, although schedulers have reduced the clash to just 30 minutes.

X Factor 2014 continues tonight on ITV at 8PM.
