Although coming just days after Cheryl's surprise wedding, we're not sure Mel's plan has been all that well timed.
According to Star magazine, Spice Girl Mel is keen to make a name for herself as this the new, new Nation's Sweetheart.
"Mel knows that Cheryl used to be the nation's sweetheart on TV each week and people expect her to be the star of the show gain Mel has other ideas," warned one of those unnamed sources.
They said: "Mel thinks she's the freshest judge on the show an dis going to make sure people hang on her every word, not Cheryl's."
Mel, Cheryl, Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh have already completed the first round of try outs for this year's series and apparently Mel has proved a hit with contestants.
Even if she did make a few of them cry in the process...
"She's had a better reception for he audition round appearances then Cheryl," the source went on to claim, "And she wants to relaunch her solo career on the show where she's determined to sing live."
What on earth could they be getting at there?
The X Factor judges will reunite for the next round of auditions in Wembley next month, before the show returns to our screens on ITV later on in the summer.
