Big Brother, X Factor are most complained shows of the year (again)

Channel 5

Reality shows including The X Factor and Big Brother have been the most complained shows this year.

Stats released by telly watchdog Ofcom have revealed that Big Brother comes out on top as this year’s most complained about series.

It's the second year running that both shows have topped the list, although the number of complaints is overall well down.

This year Big Brother had 965 complaints to Ofcom, compared to 3,000 by November in 2012.

The most complained about incidents this year included viewers saying that Big Brother was wrong to warn Jemima Slade about her 'racist' comments and, unsurprisingly, Hazel O’Sullivan and Daley Ojuederie's relationship that turned sour, resulting in the latter ultimately being kicked out of the show.

Celebrity Big Brother's two series meanwhile notched up just under 500 complaints on its own.

The X Factor was next in the list, having achieved 734 complaints so far this year, over 300 of which were about Lady Gaga's guest performance back in October.

The TV watchdog ruled that the US singer didn't breach guidelines with her dance routine that ended with the singer on the floor in her underwear.

ITV News received over 500 complaints, the majority about the decision to air clips of the Death of Lee Rigby in Woolwich.

A surprise entry for Comic Relief in fourth place, with 492 complaints. 487 were about a sketch showing Rowan Atkinson's as the Archbishop of Canterbury, making it the single most complained about incident of the year.

Finally completing the top five was The X Factor's sister show Britain's Got Talent, with over 400 complaints.

The majority were about Jennifer Lopez's guest performance, but Ofcom decided it did not warrant further investigation.

Other highly complained about shows included soaps Coronation Street and Emmerdale, BBC News and Downtown Abbey.
