Nicholas' would be winner’s song was Superman by Five For Fighting, while Sam sung her cover of Skyscraper by Demi Lovato.
There were also performances from Katy Perry, One Direction and even Elton John, which concluded with the results from Dermot O'Leary.
The host announced in his usual tense matter that, with the most votes, Sam Bailey was the winner of The X Factor 2013, becoming the tenth winner of The X Factor UK overall.
A teary Sam gushed: "I don't know what to say!" as mentor Sharon Osbourne fell to the floor, winning her first series.
She later continued: "I'm just so overwhelmed by all of the support, 20 years I've waited for this. I've loved every second of this experience.
"This is what I've always wanted, I just want to move forward now and make a better life for me and my family.
"I just want to thank everyone who has voted for me, this is the best Christmas present I ever had."
Sam's mentor Sharon added: "I want to thank everybody who has shown Sam such love and support from Day One."
Runner up Nicholas conceded: "Sam was a hard one to beat, I just want to say think you everyone who voted for me every week."
In revealing the result, Dermot revealed that Sam had received over one million votes to win the show.
She will release their winner's single for download tonight, with a physical release following midweek.
The X Factor will return to ITV next year, having already been renewed until 2016 by the channel.
However expect another series of changes, with both Gary Barlow and Sharon Osbourne having already confirmed they won't be returning.
