X Factor 2012: James Arthur banned from singing own songs

James Arthur (X Factor 2012)

XFactor 2012 hopeful James Arthur has revealed he's been banned from singing his own tracks.

Singer and songwriter James has said previously he's been looking forward to perform his own songs on the show.

But despite this year seeing bosses encouraging original artists to audition, they've so far been banned from singing their own music.

So far only Lucy Spraggan has performed an original song on the live shows, with Ella Henderson also banned from singing her own tracks.

James confessed he was a bit disappointed with the themes dictating what songs the finalists could sing, despite them being as vague as 'Songs For You'.

He told the Daily Star Sunday today: “I asked to sing my own stuff but they said I wasn’t allowed.

“I’d love to perform my own material on the show.

“That’s why I came here, to make my own music.

“But the themes dictate what you can sing.”

Even if James makes it through to next weekend's final, fans shouldn't expect him to be singing any of his original songs.

He revealed: "I’ve been told there’s no place for me to sing my own songs in the final or semi-final.

“I’ll stick to the premise of the show and do what’s asked of me. I’ll have to do my best with the themes and what I’m given.”

Fortunately it seems that James is doing well enough with the covers.

Last night saw the finalists performing twice in a bid to make next Saturday's last live show.

James first wowed with U2's One in dedication to his family, before closing the show in spectacular fashion with the Power of Love.

"That was the performance of the series," gushed Gary Barlow. "Just amazing. You are a great singer but you make people emote."

Speaking on Xtra Factor, Tulisa said: "Who do I think deserves to be the front runner? James, I think he deserves to win.

"I think if everyone who wants him to win, votes, then I think he will."

The X Factor 2012 live shows tonight on ITV1 and ITV1HD with the semi-final results show.

There will be performances from Pink and Tulisa as well as the final elimination of the series.

There's no sing off on this evening's results, meaning act with the lowest votes will automatically get the axe.
