X Factor 2012 will see guest stars including One Direction performing on the show from Saturday night.
The boys will be the first group to sing 'live' on tomorrow evening's latest performance show in a bid to boost ratings.
However the group have already pre-recorded their performance, with the boys currently in the US promoting their new album.
According to The Sun, producers want the guest stars to boost flagging viewer figures for Saturday night shows.
Last weekend's performance episode was watched by a series low of 7.6 million viewers, the lowest figures for some eight years.
An X Factor insider told the newspaper: “Everyone is worried about the ratings, particularly Simon. Something has to be done.
“Producers have known for some time they’ve had a problem with the main show and have decided to bring in chart-topping acts with a big following to boost ratings."
The source continued to the tabloid: “If anyone can save the Saturday show, it is One Direction, with their massive following. They are the biggest X Factor act ever and everyone hopes they will bring some of their fans with them.
“Simon always wants his shows to be number one and this is no different.
“He’ll do everything it takes to put The X Factor back on top.”
The X Factor continues with its live shows this weekend with a Best Of British theme.
Sunday's results show will feature performances from One Direction and Little Mix, as well as one more act being given the boot.
