X Factor star Jahmene Douglas has said that music has helped him to focus his mind, after a fairly rough upbringing.
Jahmene turned to music and his faith after the tragic death of his brother and the imprisoning of his father, who attacked his mother.
The teenager tells The Sun in an emotional interview today: "Music is my sanctuary. It was the only place I had to go in that time where I felt safe.
“A lot of people would choose to rebel but I’ve chosen to focus on singing. It’s the higher love thing. I know it sounds cheesy."
Jahmene admitted he was hoping to find love, but his head often held him back.
"I’d love to get married and have children," he told the newspaper. “I know it’s difficult for me because I’ve got a lot of stuff going on in my head."
He continued: “I don’t want to burden people with what I’ve been dealing with so that’s the reason I’ve been single for so long.
“But I’m stronger than people think. I want to spread positivity. I want to tell people, ‘You can hold on to your happiness. It doesn’t have to be stolen from you.’"
Jahmene, who revealed previously he hoped to use his fame to help raise awareness of domestic abuse, added: “It’s time to make a stand for freedom for our family... and out of respect for Daniel.”
It was revealed yesterday that Jahmene would be taking on Whitney in this evening's latest live show.
