Rihanna beats One Direction's 'Live While We're Young' to number one

One DirectionFormer The X Factor runners-up One Direction have lost out to Rihanna in this week's official chart battle, with their track 'Live While We're Young' debuting at number three.

The Bajan superstar hit the top spot with her new single 'Diamonds', after her record label brought its release date forward from November to last Monday.

Despite the boyband's hastily-scheduled appearance on the ITV1 talent contest last night, they were also beaten by 'Gangnam Style' - the viral hit by Korean rapper Psy - which slipped one place to number two.

But they did manage to beat Adele's new James Bond theme 'Skyfall', which rocketed up to number four just over 48 hours after it was made available. Ellie Goulding's 'Anything Could Happen' completed the top five.

Rihanna had 1D had fought a close battle throughout the week, with the former leading by only 250 copies in Wednesday's midweek update.

Last month, X Factor finalist Amelia Lily scored number two with her debut single, 'You Bring Me Joy'.
