X Factor finalist James Arthur has accused Gary Barlow of "tactical" judging with his comments on last night's first live show.
Following his performance of Stronger by Kelly Clarkson yesterday, James was told by Gary: “I want to give you a bit of advice, you came with bags of intensity, retain it. I can see the edges being rubbed off.”
He added: “Your song choice usually shocks me. I would have expected you to sing that song.”
Speaking on Xtra Factor afterwards, Gary continued his remarks, telling Olly Murs and Caroline Flack that he missed James' guitar.
He said: "I feel like he’s had a little bit of a makeover and I want that old guy back. I want James back as he was.”
However Nicole insisted that she wasn't trying to change James, saying: “He doesn’t need to conform in any way. He is brilliant on his own and that’s why everyone has fallen in love with him.
“He is home grown, grass roots, brilliant UK talent. He is amazing all the way. All he needs is his voice and his guitar.”
James meanwhile suggested: “I thought [saying] losing my integrity was a bit sharp, it was a bit far but maybe it was a bit of tactical judging.”
The X Factor 2012 live shows continue tonight on ITV1 at 8PM with the first results show, featuring performances from Ne-Yo and Leona Lewis.
