The X Factor 2012 live shows will kick off with an Olympic themed special tonight, it has been claimed.

11 Olympians will join the show, as the 12 finalists perform live for the first time.

According to The Sun, sports stars taking part include cyclists Laura Trott, Dani King, Lizzie Armitstead and Joanna Rowsell; boxers Nicola Adams and Luke Campbell; taekwondo ace Jade Jones; rowers Tom James, Pete Reed and Alex Gregory; and dressage champ Charlotte Dujardin.

They'll join Dermot O'Leary on stage for words of advice to the group, while former X Factor champions will be giving the contestants advice backstage.

The show will feature a "heroes" theme, with songs like Rule The World by Take That and Simply The Best being performed.

“Simon promised an Olympic night and he’s delivered. The Heroes’ show is all about celebrating the Olympics and the British summer of sport," a source told the newspaper. “It’s a feelgood show and we hope people will get a buzz from it.”

Tonight will also be the first that The X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing go head to head.

Although not clashing, this week at least, the two shows will no doubt be wanting to out rate the other.
