One Direction will make a 'surprise' appearance on The X Factor UK 2012 this weekend, it has been revealed.
The Daily Mirror report that bosses hope that the boys will help boost ratings and beat Strictly Come Dancing.
Saturday night will see the two shows go live on the same night for the first time this year, although there won't be any clash.
“X Factor is where is all began for One Direction so it makes sense for them to come back and perform," a source said. "Making an appearance on Saturday means they are the secret weapon that could tip the balance in the ratings war.
“They’ve also said they’ll act like extra mentors backstage for this first weekend."
The supposed insider told the newspaper: “Strictly have got some big names, but nothing as big as One Direction.
"It is going to be a colourful and action-packed first show and we are confident everyone will be talking about The X Factor after Saturday night.”
The group will been on stage with host Dermot O'Leary and backstage with the acts.
The boys will return to the show later this month to perform their new single Live While We're Young.
