X Factor 2012: James Arthur 'disappointed' over mum's comments

James Arthur (X Factor 2012)

X Factor's James Arthur has said he was left "disappointed" after his mum seemingly claimed he had lied about his upbringing on the show.

The 24-year-old was seen last month's audition shows telling a sad tale of a teenager who was left out on the streets following his parent’s divorce.

He told host Dermot O’Leary on the programme: “My mum and dad split up when I was very young, the difficult thing for me was the fact that my mum and my dad didn’t have any sort of relationship for my entire life, I went off the rails especially at school, I used to get suspended, thrown out.

“I ended up like sleeping rough sometimes, so I volunteered myself into foster care, I didn’t want to be involved in any of the arguing anymore, I just wanted to get away, so initially music was a coping mechanism.”

But his mum Shirley Ashworth told Gazette Live that James was slightly over exaggerating his stories of sleeping on the streets.

“James was a typical teenage lad and could be stroppy at times. There was probably one occasion where we fell out and he stayed on a friend’s sofa – how many parents of teenagers haven’t been through that?” she said.

The 45-year-old explained: “It’s not how it’s been perceived. He got into a little trouble at school at times, but no more than many other teenage boys. His whole family has supported him his entire life and we’re so, so proud of him.”

But James has now hit back at his mum, telling heat magazine: "I think she was covering herself so she didn't look like a bad mum. But I wasn't exaggerating.

"She's my mum and I love my mum and I'm not going to cut her out my life, but I was disappointed she did that. I could have said a lot worse."
