X Factor 2012 producers will attempt to boost ratings for the live shows with a 'wildcard' twist allowing one previously ditched act to return, it's claimed.
This weekend, viewers will see Gary Barlow, Nicole Scherzinger, Tulisa and Louis Walsh choose three acts from their categories to make the final 12.
However, The Sun claims that the judges have also chosen four rejects to compete for the special second chance place.
The identities of the mystery hopefuls will be revealed in Sunday's episode, with viewers able to vote for who they want back in the competition. The winner will then join the other finalists on next Saturday's first live show.
A source said: "We like to add new twists to the show every year and this time the public get to choose an act to be added to the competition.
"With the standard so high this year, the judges had a tough time choosing their three, so this gives another amazing act the chance to perform on the X Factor stage."
The wildcards are said to have moved in to the Corinthia Hotel in London with the other contestants ahead of their potential returns.
The news comes after fans started a Facebook campaign to get rock singer Joseph Whelan back on the show, which has attracted over 225,000 likes.
A similar twist was used in the seventh series, allowing each judge to bring back one act each, while last year's series saw viewers vote for Amelia Lily to replace the controversial Frankie Cocozza.
The X Factor 2012 continues tomorrow at 8.00pm and Sunday at 7.40pm with the judges' houses stage.
