The Voice 2013 UK: Will.i.am admits last year's show "failed"

Will.i.am (The Voice UK 2013)

Will.i.am has admitted that The Voice UK "flopped" last year because winner Leanne Mitchell failed to get chart success.

It seems a tad unfair on Leanne, who has yet to even release her debut album.

But her winner's single - a cover of Whitney Houston's Run To You - didn't make the Top 40 last year.

Speaking to the Sunday Mirror, Will said that the label behind the artists went too slow with their releases.

“We experienced a hole in the system. I don’t know if the label engaged," he said. “They went too slow. Everyone was like, ‘She’s so great, let’s take our time, lah-de-dah’. I hope we learn from that.”

Will previously said that the winner of The Voice 2013 needed to rush their album out into the charts.

"I hope the label that’s the artists are going to will learn this year," he explained. “They need to have songs ready. Right from the moment they sing, they need to rush it and have a song ready to go three days after the show’s over. No time to waste.”

However clashing with Will, Sir Tom thought that last year the label rushed too much.

After coaching Leanne, the Welsh performer also complained: “The one problem is if you win The Voice, it’s out of your hands completely. Because you’re signed to Universal Records, with management, agency, the whole thing.”
