Hit ITV2 series The Only Is Essex managed to pick up a BAFTA award at tonight's 2011 television award ceremony, beating tough competition from the likes of BBC Two's Miranda and Channel 4's Big Fat Gypsy Weddings. The gang picked up the gong for the YouTube audience award.
Following numerous screaming and screeching from the cast who attended the ceremony, the show's producer said: "Thank you for this, it is unbelievable. We started making this show 11 months ago and never thought we'd be here."
Mark Wright added: "You know what, we're absolutely overwhelmed at just being invited, let alone wining. I want to thank the people who have given us the opportunity. "
The show's makers commented: "Thank you to the audience... and apologies to Bradley Walsh who tells me I've ruined his neighbourhood."
Other nominees in the category included Channel 4's fly on the wall doc Big Fat Gypsy Weddings, ITV1 costume drama Downton Abbey, BBC Four's foreign language series The Killing, BBC Two comedy Miranda and BBC One's Sherlock drama series.
The Only Way Is Essex returns for a third series on ITV2 this autumn.
