TellyMix reported last year how the stars of hit ITV2 reality show The Only Way Is Essex were refusing to take part in another series unless they were paid - well it seems like they've got their way! According to The Mirror today, the cast members in the new series, which started on Sunday, are now raking it in... on £50 a day.
The amount works out at just over the minimum wage, however with the show flinging its stars such as Amy Childs and Mark Wright into the world of celebrity we don't think they'll mind too much.
A source told the tabloid: "The cast were really unhappy between the two series. Despite it being a reality show, they felt they deserved to get paid for their time.
"It’s impossible for them to hold down full-time jobs while the series is going on, especially when there are scenes in their workplace, such as when Amy books another cast member into her salon.
“They didn’t realise how much of an impact it would have on their lives, so they were determined to earn something out of it."
Talking about negotiations for the payment, star Mark Wright revealed: "They argued that without the show, we wouldn’t be where we are. Our argument was that we helped make the show what it was."
He added: “Now, we are getting paid, yes. I’m not expecting to become a millionaire off of my wages but it leads to other things. PAs, my fragrance... It’s not all about my wages from the show.”
