Sir Bradley Wiggins reveals why he's taking a risk on The Jump 2017

Sir Bradley Wiggins has revealed why he's taken a risk and signed up for Channel 4's The Jump.

The new series begins next month on Channel 4 and recently retired cycling champion Bradley is one of the names confirmed on the line up.

And he's admitted to signing up to the show to ensure he doesn't get fat after giving up professional cycling.

The Olympic and Tour De France winner said: “I don’t want to get fat and unfit, I’m really paranoid and conscious of that.

“I just don’t trust myself one bit. I’ve been institutionalised in sport since I was 12, so it’s a big change."

He told the Sunday People newspaper: “I don’t want to let it go and then find myself two or three years down the line in a bit of a state.

“I have to do it for my mental health, I have to keep busy and in a routine. I’ve an obsessive nature, what-ever I do, I do to excess, so I’d rather keep good and clean.”

The Jump has proved controversial ever since its first series with a string of celebs suffering injuries.

Last year was particularly bad and a year on, Holby City actress Tina Hobley still needs a crutch to walk.

"For much of the year I haven’t been able to drive, dress, wash my hair or have a bath unaided," she said previously. "I’m very upset about not skiing with my children as I have been going for the last 30 years.

"It has been a really tough year, I’m not going to deny that. I hope I won’t be left with long-term problems.”

However Channel 4 has insisted there has been a thorough review of safety standards ahead of the new series.

The Jump begins on February 5 on Channel 4.
