The Island with Bear Grylls kicked off its 2018 series last week and there was controversy from the off.

A total of 16 contestants have been sent to live on an uninhabited pacific island with just the clothes on their back and a few basic survival tools. As always, they’re filming everything that happens themselves as they try to survive for five weeks.

In a new twist for this year, the contestants have been split into two groups based on their wages.

One group earns an average of £100,000 a year while the other takes home less than the national average.

Within the first two days, the separate groups had met up and there was an almost instant clash of cultures.

In last night’s episode, life on The Island got too much for one contestant as Erance left the show.

He quit, describing the experience as “hell on earth”.

“This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. My whole entire life I’ve had to do some hard stuff, I need to get off this island,” he told cameras. “I hate it.”

Erance added: “This is not a holiday. This is hell on earth. I’m screaming to go home.”

He then radioed to Bear’s team to request an evacuation: “I’m ready to leave this island. I wanna go. I miss my family.

“I cannot do this. The longer I’m here, the more I’m getting tortured.”

Earlier in the episode, vegetarian Erance was seen struggling after killing a snake for food.

The Island with Bear Grylls continues Monday nights at 9PM on Channel 4.
