The Island with Bear Grylls returns with 1.6 million on Channel 4

An average audience of more than 1.6 million tuned into the start of The Island with Bear Gyrlls last night.

It was the beginning of Series 2 and this year has a new format with two Islands, housing groups of both men and women.

Yesterday evening's series opener focused on the men and their first few days surviving, seeing an average of 1.63 million viewers on Channel 4.

It's around 300,000 viewers down on the start of last year's first series, which begun on a Monday slot in May with 1.9 million.

It was however Channel 4's most watched show of the night with Supercars and First Dates attracting 1.05 and 1.15 million viewers respectively either side of the The Island.

The Island continues tonight on Channel 4 with an episode on the women's Island.
