The Bachelor has never been a huge hit, but going against the Olympics was never going to help the series.
Some episodes have been watched by fewer than 300,000 viewers, leaving Spencer returning to the reality series that made him famous.
An insider told The Sun: “Spencer has realised that he needs the show as The Bachelor wasn’t the ratings success that he hoped so he slunk back with his tail between his legs.”
The source continued: “Spencer is too valuable to lose. Bosses knew they couldn’t continue to go from strength to strength and have a ratings winner for series four if they lost their two main guys Spencer and Hugo.
“They saw the impact Mark Wright leaving TOWIE had on the show so decided it wasn’t worth the risk and signed Spencer again despite his coke shame and him defecting to a rival channel."
However Spencer said: “I didn’t leave Made In Chelsea or get fired. Why leave? It is doing really well in the ratings so it’s best to stick with it.”
The fourth series of Made In Chelsea will air later this year on E4.
