Speaking at last week's launch of the ninth series of the show, the business mogul conceded he had a few regrets when it came to past winners.
While Lord Sugar didn't mention any names, he did claim he and his team had been "fooled a few times" during the previous series.
He said: "It’s a very good process because you are given 12 weeks to make your decisions on the person. We have been fooled a few times. I’m not perfect.
"There are occasions where I might have got it wrong. I make it clear I’m only going to be there in an advisory capacity, it doesn’t bother me what the business is about."
This year is the third with a new format, a £250,000 business investment rather than a £100,000 job.
And in a new twist, the 16 candidates have to submit business plans before they enter the competition and reveal them at the start of the show.
Lord Sugar explained "I have a quick glimpse at what their business plan is about initially. But I don’t go into too much detail and do a deep dive into the plan until we get to the end of the process."
After the first episode on Tuesday 7th May, The Apprentice will air on BBC One on Wednesdays at 9pm, from 8th May.
