Ruth and pro partner Anton Du Beke performed the Waltz on Saturday night for their first performance.

And Ruth revealed this week the nerves were so great she “couldn’t feel her legs” and almost completely blanked when the dance started.

Speaking on It Takes Two, she said: “It is truly the most terrifying thing I’ve done. This is more than nerves. I get nerves, I do live TV…

“This is was blind terror.”

Ruth scored 16 points from the judges, with Anton joking that everything was fine “from the waist up”.

The total – which included just a three from Craig Revel Horwood – left the pair joint bottom of the table alongside comedian Brian Conley who danced the Tango.

In a separate chat on ITV’s Loose Women, Ruth added: “Everything the judges said to me was absolutely right. Bruno said, ‘You were clinging onto Anton’, which I was because the minute I went wrong I went a bit dance-blind…

“The dress rehearsal, if I could have just done that and gone home it would’ve been perfect. [In the rehearsal], I did OK and there were no judges!”

Ruth went on to reveal that Strictly judge Craig tried to pick up her spirits after the live show.

After drinking in the bar post performance, Craig told her: “Darling, it’s the bottom everyone talks about. Top or bottom is what everyone talks about.”

Ruth added: “The only way is up I suppose!”

For week 2, Ruth and Anton will perform a Charleston to The Charleston by Bob Wilson and his Varsity Rhythm Boys.

Ruth said from training: “It’s really exhausting. I love the Charleston but it is exhausting. my legs hurt, my back hurts!”
